Compass Necklace

Compass necklaces have been worn by ladies since compasses where used to guide large Spanish or English vessels through treacherous waters in the Caribbean. In fact many captains in that time carried their compass hanging from their necks; it was the only way to know for sure that they had control of the direction their vessel was going. Now for your wife’s birthday we are not thinking about an actual compass hanging from her neck. This would be a little corny for her and a bad move on your part.

We are thinking more on the grounds of a gold compass rose with a nice gold chain. If you have an ample budget we would go for a platinum chain and platinum compass rose with yellow gold or diamond directions. They are made in many different styles and sizes and they would look great on most any woman.

Another popular model is an actual antique compass that does not work anymore. It is basically the compass box, with the needles there and in place but they don’t really work. They are welded in place. Many of these are made of brass and/or copper. They are elegant and nice but the, magnetic properties have been removed from them.

Another popular model which is also a great seller has the True North in the position of the heart on the body and the needle points towards it. It is supposed to show that everything points towards the heart which is the center and the true north of the body and soul. Other models have real compasses attached to chains but these are mostly used by teenage girls and boys. Jewelry compass necklaces are usually made of yellow gold or silver and the needles do not really point North, they have the needles and these move but they are not magnetic and do not point in the real direction.

In fact the first problem you would find to using a compass around your neck to find a direction is that the compass is not horizontal, it is vertical and sideways, so it will never point in the right direction. For a compass to work, the needles have to be on a horizontal plane, they do not work when pointing downwards or upwards. Anyway, we do not expect anyone to try to find his or her way around the world with a compass necklace, it is a jewel, and it is only decoration.

When buying a compass necklace be sure that the compass is proportional to the chain holding it. Remember that the focal point should be the compass itself and not the chain holding it. A compass is fine for a young girl to wear but for a woman it is better for her to wear an old style compass not one like those used today with a window and the water bubble where the needles are. A compass rose is probably the most elegant and best option on a necklace for a woman.
